Thyme Herb Plants - Glimpse of History

The fragrant herb thyme has a long and fascinating history dating back thousands of years. Originating in the Mediterranean region, this culinary staple was used by the ancient Greeks and Romans for its aroma and medicinal properties. Thyme eventually spread throughout Europe, referencing it in literature and art from many different countries. Today, thyme is one of the most popular herbs used in cooking, featured in various dishes across cultures.

Thyme Herb Plants - Growing

Thyme flourishes in full sunlight and enjoys warm weather. If you are growing in a pot indoors, plant it in a place that receives ample sunlight. Soil should drain well so that there is no standing water. In the garden, plant with companions that tolerate drought. Cut the plants back hard after flowering to avoid the thyme going leggy. When it becomes woody, layer thyme weighing down the stems to maximise the contact with the soil until it grows more roots. This is also an excellent way of encouraging thyme plants to produce more fresh stems.

Thyme Herb Plants- Harvesting

Harvesting thyme is a simple process that can help you get the most out of your plant. Harvest thyme before the appearance of the flowers by cutting off the top of 5 to 6 inches. Please note that leaving at least five inches of growth allows plants to continue to thrive. Leave the tough, woody parts. When refrigerated, it will last up to two weeks. It can also be dried or frozen.
