Dill Plants – A Taste of History

Dill has been valued for centuries for its distinct flavour and medicinal properties. Originating in the Mediterranean and western Asia, dill was a staple in ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman cultures, where it symbolised wealth and was used to treat ailments such as digestive issues and insomnia.

The herb’s seeds and leaves were prized for their aromatic qualities, often infused into oils or teas. In medieval Europe, dill was thought to have magical properties, used in rituals to ward off evil spirits. Today, dill continues to connect us to its rich history, gracing kitchens and gardens worldwide with its unique flavour and timeless charm.

Dill Plants – Growing Tips

Growing dill is simple and rewarding. Here’s how to help your dill plants flourish:

  • Choose the Right Location

Place your dill plants in a sunny spot with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

  • Prepare the Soil

Use well-draining, nutrient-rich soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Loosen the soil to make it easier for the roots to establish.

  • Plant Carefully

Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball of your dill plant. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the crown is at soil level, and gently fill the hole with soil or compost.

  • Water Regularly

Water immediately after planting and keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy to help the roots settle.

  • Support Growth

Dill can grow tall, so consider adding stakes or planting near a support structure to prevent it from falling over in windy conditions.

  • Avoid Transplanting

Dill doesn’t respond well to being moved, so plant it in its final location to avoid stress.

Dill Plants Companion Planting

Known to attract beneficial insects like ladybirds and parasitic wasps, dill helps keep pests such as aphids and spider mites in check. It pairs wonderfully with vegetables like cucumbers, onions, and lettuce, promoting healthy growth and deterring harmful bugs. However, avoid planting dill near carrots, as it can hinder their development. Dill Plants – Harvesting Guide

Dill, as an annual plant, offers a season of fresh, aromatic leaves and seeds, perfect for culinary use. You can begin harvesting once the plant reaches 20 - 25 cm in height. For the best flavour, harvest early in the morning when the essential oils are most concentrated. Always use clean scissors or pruning shears to avoid damaging the plant.

To encourage continued growth, take only a few leaves at a time and avoid cutting the central stem. If you’re harvesting dill seeds, wait until the flower heads turn brown and the seeds easily detach. Proper harvesting ensures that your dill plant remains productive and provides a fresh, aromatic touch to your cooking.
